Disclosure: ElevenLabs, Runway, Descript, Synthesia and Meshy links are affiliate links (marked). If you sign up through them I may earn a commission at no extra cost to you. It doesn’t affect what I recommend, and there are no paid placements, ever. Prices and free limits change often, so always confirm on the official site.
Almost every AI tool says “start free” on its homepage. In practice, “free” can mean anything from a genuinely useful everyday tool to a one-time pile of credits that disappears in ten minutes.
I grouped the tools on AIForgeHub by how their free plan actually works, so you know the catch before you sign up.
1. Usable recurring free plans
These tools let you get real work done week after week without paying. Most have daily message caps or history limits, but they reset and don’t force an upgrade for light or moderate use.
| Tool | What’s free | The catch |
|---|---|---|
| ChatGPT | Free version for writing, chat and limited images | Usage and image caps; the $8/mo Go tier may also show ads |
| Claude | Free chat and document help | Message limits reset on a timer; Claude Code requires a paid plan |
| Google Gemini | $0/mo with a Google account | Workspace features and top models depend on your plan and country |
| Perplexity | Web search answers with source links | Limited weekly usage on deeper Pro searches and top models |
| Gemini Notebook (NotebookLM) | Free with a Google account (up to 100 notebooks, 50 sources each) | Only knows the documents you feed it |
| Grammarly | Basic spelling and grammar checks | Tone rewrites and deeper suggestions push you toward Pro |
| Otter.ai | Basic live transcription plan | Monthly minute caps, and its bot joins the call as a participant |
| Granola | Bot-free meeting notes | Free plan only keeps 30 days of meeting history |
2. Daily, weekly or monthly refills (with catches)
These refill your credits on a schedule, which is great for testing or occasional projects. Watch the fine print on commercial rights, model access and how fast a single prompt eats your allowance.
| Tool | How it refills | The catch |
|---|---|---|
| Lovable | 5 build credits a day (up to 30/mo), no card needed | Every chat message uses credits, and bigger changes use more |
| Ideogram | Weekly free credits for eligible accounts | Free images are public; private mode requires Plus ($20/mo) or Pro |
| Krea | 100 compute units a day | No commercial rights on Free, upscaling is capped at 2K, and third-party models require a paid plan |
| Adobe Firefly | Limited monthly generative credits | Video and partner models use credits quickly |
| Cursor | Free plan with limited agent requests | Multi-file agent edits burn through the free allowance fast |
| GitHub Copilot | Free plan with limited chat and agent usage | Monthly caps unless you qualify for student or open-source access |
| Descript (affiliate link) • review | 60 media minutes a month | One long podcast or interview can use your whole month |
3. One-time trial credits that never refill
These look like normal free plans at sign-up, but the credits are a one-time pool. Once you spend them, you either pay or stop generating.
| Tool | One-time allowance | The catch |
|---|---|---|
| Runway (affiliate link) • review | 125 credits once | Video uses credits fast, and they never refill |
| Gamma | 400 credits at sign-up | Credits don’t refill, and free exports carry a small Gamma badge |
| Notion AI | Limited AI trial inside Notion | Full Notion AI requires the Business plan ($20/member/mo) |
4. Free plans with download, watermark or license catches
You can make things for free in these tools, but taking the file with you or using it in client or commercial work is where the wall hits.
| Tool | What’s free | The catch |
|---|---|---|
| Suno | Generate and stream songs on Suno (v6-mini model) | No monthly downloads on the free plan, and no commercial use |
| ElevenLabs (affiliate link) • review | 10k credits a month | No commercial license on Free (commercial rights start on Starter at $6/mo) |
| Synthesia (affiliate link) • review | Basic plan, 500 credits/month + first 10 video min included | Free videos are watermarked and share by link only (no MP4 downloads) |
| Meshy (affiliate link) • review | 100 credits a month | Free 3D models use a CC BY 4.0 license, so you have to credit Meshy |
5. Paid from day one (no free plan)
Midjourney is the one tool on my list with no free tier at all. Basic starts at $10/mo, and on the cheaper plans your images are public on Midjourney’s site. If you want to generate images for free first, try Ideogram, Krea or Adobe Firefly.
Three rules before you use a free plan
- Check if you can export. Make one quick test item and try downloading it before you spend an hour building a real project.
- Check commercial rights. If the work is for a business, client or monetized channel, free tiers on tools like ElevenLabs, Suno and Krea don’t cover commercial use.
- Plan your prompt first on one-time credit tools. In Gamma or Runway, write out your outline or shot list in a free chat tool first so you don’t waste non-refilling credits.
