What it’s good for
Descript turns your recording into a transcript, and you edit the video or podcast by editing that text. Delete a sentence in the transcript and it’s cut from the recording too.
It’s a much friendlier way to remove filler words and mistakes than dragging clips around a timeline.
Who it’s for
Podcasters, YouTubers and anyone who records interviews or talking-head videos and doesn’t enjoy fiddly editing.
Watch out for
- The free plan gives you 60 media minutes a month. A couple of long recordings can use that up.
- Paid plans include AI Speech for custom voice clones and for patching words. Only clone your own voice or one you have permission to use.
- Hobbyist is $24/mo on monthly billing but $16/mo on a yearly plan. That’s a big gap, so think about how long you’ll use it.
How it compares
ElevenLabs is better if you only need a voiceover from a script. Synthesia is for videos with an AI presenter. Runway makes new video with AI, it doesn’t edit what you recorded. More in ElevenLabs vs Descript and Best AI voice generators.
Before you pay
Edit one real episode or video on the free plan. If editing the transcript saves you time, it’s worth paying for. Heads up: the Descript link on this page is an affiliate link, so I may earn a commission if you sign up. It doesn’t change what I say here.
How I wrote this: plan and price details come from the official pricing page (checked Oct 2026). The rest is my own take from reading the official pages, not a lab test. How I review
