Both are excellent general assistants and both have free plans. The honest answer is: try both on your own tasks for a week.

Pick ChatGPT if…
- You want one app for writing, image creation and voice chats.
- You want the most plan options, including a cheaper Go tier.
Pick Claude if…
- You work with long documents and want careful, well-structured writing.
- You want Claude Code included with a paid plan.
Facts above come from chatgpt.com/pricing and claude.com/pricing (checked Oct 20, 2026). The “pick if” notes are my opinion.
Where they really differ
ChatGPT is the broader app. It makes images, does voice chats and has more plans to pick from, including the cheaper Go tier. Claude is narrower but strong at what it does: long documents, careful writing and code, with Claude Code in every paid plan.
If you’re choosing for writing, give both the same real task, like an email you actually need to send, and keep the one whose answer you’d send. If you need images too, ChatGPT is the easier pick, since image creation isn’t listed on Claude’s pricing page.
Either way, both can get facts wrong. Check anything that matters before you use it.
