ElevenLabs vs Descript (2026): Honest Comparison

Last updated Oct 2026 • Prices checked on official pricing pages in Oct 2026 (USD)

Disclosure: ElevenLabs, Runway, Descript, Synthesia and Meshy links are affiliate links (marked). If you sign up through them I may earn a commission at no extra cost to you. It doesn’t affect what I recommend, and there are no paid placements, ever. Prices change often, so always confirm on the official site.

People compare these two because both show up on “AI audio” lists, but they solve different problems. ElevenLabs turns a written script into a natural-sounding voiceover. Descript edits audio and video you recorded by letting you edit the transcript like a document.

Pick ElevenLabs if…

Pick Descript if…

Facts above come from elevenlabs.io/pricing and descript.com/pricing (checked Oct 27, 2026). The “pick if” notes are my opinion.

Where they really differ

ElevenLabs is a voice generator first. Its voices handle pacing, breathing and tone better than built-in text-to-speech in video editors, and Starter is $6/mo. Just remember that the free 10k-credit plan doesn’t include commercial rights, and you should never clone someone’s voice without their clear permission.

Descript is a podcast and video editor. It does include an AI voice feature for patching a misspoken word without re-recording, or reading a short intro, but you pay for Descript ($24/mo monthly or $16/mo billed yearly on Hobbyist) because editing a transcript is much faster than dragging waveforms on a timeline. In fact, many creators use both: they generate narration in ElevenLabs and assemble the final episode in Descript.
