Why look past ChatGPT?
ChatGPT is a fine default, but it isn’t the best at everything. Most people who look for an alternative want one of three things: better writing on long documents, tighter Google integration, or answers with sources.
For long documents and careful writing, I’d try Claude. Every paid Claude plan also includes Claude Code. If your life is in Gmail, Docs and Drive, Gemini fits better, and paid plans start at $4.99/mo. When you need sources you can click and check, Perplexity is the one.
All three have free plans. The easiest test is to give each one the same real task and see which answer you’d actually use.
